Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday called on Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states to pursue “mutual benefit and win-win results” while addressing the plenary session of the 25th SCO Heads of State Council meeting in Tianjin.
Xi highlighted the organisation’s growth, describing it as the “world’s largest regional grouping,” and credited it with achieving “groundbreaking and historic progress in development and cooperation.” He urged members to seek common ground while setting aside differences to strengthen collective progress.
Reinforcing China’s commitment to the bloc, Xi pledged a grant of 2 billion yuan (about USD 281 million) to SCO member states within this year.
The session took place against the backdrop of looming US tariffs and growing global economic uncertainty.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also scheduled to address the plenary session, where he will outline India’s approach to enhancing regional cooperation under the SCO framework. Following his address, Modi will hold a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin before departing for India, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed.
PM Modi arrived in Tianjin on Saturday for the two-day summit, which began on August 31 and concludes on September 1.
